Mr and Mrs L., who live in a charming period property near Lewes, approached us with a clear objective: to improve the performance of their beautiful natural marble fireplace while preserving its character and elegance. Their large living room, though full of period charm, was often uncomfortably cold.

They were keen to find a solution that would deliver meaningful warmth to the space while also minimising the draughts typically associated with traditional open fireplaces. To achieve this, we carried out considered adjustments to ensure that the new high-efficiency appliance would complement, rather than compromise, the original marble surround. The addition of a granite hearth and slips created a subtle visual bridge between old and new, allowing the contemporary insert to sit harmoniously within the historic setting.

The result was a high-output Barbas insert that significantly improves the room’s heating capability. Not only does it provide the warmth needed to make the large living area comfortable, but it also dramatically reduces the draughts that would otherwise rush up the chimney of an open fire. Even when the fire isn’t being used, the improved sealing and efficiency of the insert ensure that heat loss is minimised, making the room far more comfortable throughout the year while retaining the timeless beauty of the original fireplace.
